This archive features two rare, never-before- published original 8 x 10 b&w photos. The first is of Jimi Hendrix and Arthur Lee of Love seated on the couch in the upstairs dressing room at the “old” Whiskey (pre-fire) circa 1968/69. Love’s 1966 recording of the Bachrach/David composition, “My Little Red Book,” was the group’s and their record company Elektra’s first charting single. Arthur Lee was famous when he first saw Jimi backing the Isley Brothers. He immediately booked the young and unknown Hendrix to play on one of his sessions. Love headlined the Whiskey many times. In 1966 Elektra’s newest recording artists, the Doors were frequently their opening act. Arthur Lee immortalized the Whiskey in his composition, “Sunset between Clark and Hilldale.” Love’s 1967 album “Forever Changes” still ranks as one of the best albums ever produced. The second exceptional photo documents the Whiskey on fire, through the haze of smoke the marquis reads Humble Pie and Jo Jo Gunne. On May 4, 1971, the first night of Humble Pie’s scheduled five-day run, Steve Marriott formerly with the Small Faces left a burning cigarette ---in the same couch where Jimi and Arthur sat—it smoldered and burst into flames while he and band mates Frampton, Ridley and Shirley performed. The venue was closed for months of reconstruction. Sadly, that incident was an eerie preview of Marriott’s own 1991 demise, again in a fire of his own devise when he fell asleep with a lit cigarette. Also included is a September 12, 1970 issue of Disc and Music Echo (12 x 14.5) with a color picture of Hendrix on the cover and an interview inside, another article of interest “Doors Under Jail Threat,” appears on page 15 with a b&w picture of Jim Morrison. Very good condition. Comes with a Gotta Have Rock & Roll™ Certificate of Authenticity.
