Popular New York Yankees catcher and the 1976 American League MVP Thurman Munson “pokes fun of a picture of himself from his college days as a member of the Kent State University baseball team during a testimonial dinner given in his honor by the Kent State Alumni. Assoc.” in this original 10 X 8 black and white UPI press photograph. Munson was selected by the Yankees in the 1968 baseball draft and in his first full rookie season playing with team won the 1970 American League Rookie of the Year Award; the 1st catcher to ever do so. Munson received the first of three consecutive Gold Glove Awards in 1973 and in 1976 he won the American League MVP Award. To honor him, the Yankees have retired Munson's uniform number "15."
