This is “Shoeless Joe” Jackson’s personal Penmark notebook which he would try to write notes in. This notebook is both rare and exceptional because Jackson was actually illiterate. It is well known and documented that he could not read or write, and when people asked him for an autograph his wife would generally be the one to sign. This notebook is one of few known genuine examples of Jackson's penmanship. In the notebook, Jackson has written down some simple calculations, some words, as well as a list.
Jackson was an outfielder in the MLB from 1908 to 1920 and was one of the most exceptional players of his day. However, he is most known for his involvement in the “Black Sox Scandal” in which members of the 1919 White Sox conspired to fix the World Series. He was subsequently banned from the MLB after the 1920 season, but is considered to be one of the greatest players of all time and still has the third highest career batting-average of all time (.356).
