Two signatures and a hand addressed envelope dated from 1891 of former President Rutherford B. Hayes signed on a letter requesting an autograph upon which Hayes pens a discipline note, “A collector of autographs should always send an envelope addressed and ready for mailing with a card or slip of paper for the auto.” Perhaps a good lesson for present day autograph collectors to follow. The original written request is torn away from this 4.5 X 7 folded letter in which Hayes’ note appears written on a 1.25 X 7 remaining page, with two signatures signed beneath/inside. One signature is signed “Rutherford B. Hayes” in full and his second signature is signed “RB Hayes.” The back of the letter is dated May 3, 1891 in another hand. The 6.25 X 3.5 envelope is addressed to the recipient in Hayes’ hand. Hayes was a committed abolitionist and served as the 19th President of the United States (1877-1881). Written in black quill pen. Very good condition. Guaranteed to pass James Spence Authentication (JSA) and comes with a Gotta Have Rock & Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
