1861 Chromolithograph “Oil Painting” of President George Washington
Chromolithograph of President George Washington with copyright stamp on verso: "Warranted Oil Colors. Enter according to Act of Congress, in the year 1861, by E. C. Middleton, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court for the Southern District of Ohio Cincinnati.”. Period gold gilt frame. From a famous photograph of Washington, this image by Middleton, along with another of Lincoln that he did, was extremely popular. Middleton's "oil print" process, produced an affordable "oil painting" for those wanting a portrait of the nation's heroes at the onset of the Civil War.
