Original Purple Heart Award Certificate dated May 15, 1943 which indicates as awarded by the President pursuant to authority vested in him by Congress, awards the Purple Heart “Established by General George Washington at Newburgh, New York, August 7, 1782.” The named U.S. Naval Reserve recipient received the award “For Military Merit and for Wounds Received in Action resulting in his death June 4, 1942.”
