This jersey is debatably the most important Maradona jersey to ever come up for auction. The only comparable jersey would be the iconic “Hand of God” jersey which sold for almost 10,000,000.
This Adidas blue and white striped short sleeved jersey has an Argentina (AFA) badge and Adidas logo on the front and a black number 10 on the reverse.
It also exhibits heavy use with sweat and pitch stains throughout the jersey. Signed by Diego Maradona in 1979, this piece of history is the start of the soccer hero that is Maradona.
This jersey was worn by Maradona throughout the 1979 World Youth Cup, and most importantly during the legendary game against the Soviet Union on 9/7/1979. During the game Maradona scored a goal which led to Argentina beating the Soviet Union 3-1.
1979 was the onset of his unparalleled international career which finished with Four World Cup Victories. Maradona is hailed by many as the greatest soccer player to ever live, and this Youth World Cup Jersey is the making of the legend.
The jersey comes from equipment manager Vicente Nieva. Nieva can be seen throughout the tournament and is standing right by Maradona’s side after they won the final game. Maradona gifted the jersey to Nieva right after the game against the Soviet Union.
