George' Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" Recording and Friar Park House Owned & Used Cast Iron Crucifix on Hard Wood Cross
This cast bronze crucifix affixed to a large, heavy hardwood cross was owned and used by Beatle Geore Harrison, and was discovered in his Friar Park home in Henley-on-Thames where it had previously hung in the office of the Mother Superior when the property was a nunnery and a school.
According the the Certificate of Authenticity which gives a very detailed description of the provenance of the crucifix and cross, the ross was carved from a fallen tree on the property after a big storm. Apparently George remarked how he felt about the figure of Christ upon it looking rather like him during his All Things Must Pass days in 1970. According to the COA, George kept it in the studio wile recording "My Sweet Lord." For a brief time the cross was kept in Billy Preston's room at George's Friar Park home, as he was a devout Christian, and then it was later donated to the Hare Krishna Festival of India to raise money for the traveling event. According to the Certificate, the cross was mentioned many times by George's close friend and Apple executive director Derek Taylor, who confirmed that George was particularly stricken with this piece because he really did feel it looked very much like him.
