1887 deed document signed by James M. Trotter (1842-1892) in his capacity as the Recorder of Deeds in Washington, D.C.. Trotter was born into slavery but grew up in freedom, serving in a black infantry regiment during the Civil War, becoming the second man of color to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant. After the war he was the first African American hired by the US Post Office where he worked for many years.
