The movie's production began in 1981 when Jean-Michel Basquiat was only 19. Despite featuring the life of Basquiat as he turns 20 in New York City, the movie is not a documentary or biography of the artist's life. Instead, the film is a romantic take on the culture in which Basquiat operated, glorifying contemporary societal changes through the lens of artists, musicians and high society.
Directors' Fortnight is the selection showcasing a broad spectrum of films parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. The director's Fortnight is considered an innovative and unique practice in recent cinema.
The film's editor, Pamela French, was also great friends with Keith Haring, and some of the current auction lots come from her personal collection!
