John Lennon Owned & Worn Blue Sunglasses, Pen and Matchbook from "Kyoko Kidnapping"

A collection of John Lennon owned and used items that comes with a fascinating, very personal and very public backstory! In April of 1971 John Lennon and Yoko Ono went to Spain to retrieve her daughter Kyoko (from her first marriage, to Tony Cox) from Spain. When they went to Spain they stayed at the Melia Mallorca Hotel where they met Francisca Umbert who at that time was the hotel's switchboard operator. They became friendly with her as everyone at the hotel always had to go past her in order to get to their rooms. John's assistant at the time (May Pang, who he subsequently would have a notorious affair with) spent a lot of time talking to her. One night John and Yoko asked her for a restaurant suggestion where they could go and have a peaceful dinner without anyone bothering them. That restaurant was "El Patio". When they returned, John greeted Francisca thanking her for the recommendation and asked her what her name was, he then signed inscribed the matchbook to her, signing both his name and Yoko's. A day or two later the Civil Guard came to the hotel as the Lennon's had been accused of kidnapping her daughter Kyoko (this was April 23), and they were held for questioning. They eventually returned to the hotel and on the day they left, May Pang spent a few hours waiting at the hotel for them to be ready to go. When John came down he gave Francisca his blue sunglasses and a Mont Blanc fountain pen, which he signed some documents for May.

The matchbook is signed and inscribed in blue ink, and it appears that Francisca must have added their picture to the back of it.

An incredible personal collection from John Lennon during a very tumultuous time in his and Yoko's lives.

Very good vintage condition.
