In this group of seven black and white photographs (5 - 10" x 8”, 2 - 8" x 10”) noted Detroit area photographer Leni Sinclair captures the drama concerning the attempt by the U.S. government to deport John Lennon as Richard Nixon deemed him a threat to his 1972 re-election. She has signed and annotated the verso of each photograph. Four of the photographs were taken at the same gathering before the press in Federal Court, New York City and picture the central images of John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Rennie Davis. Two of the photographs are taken of Davis, Stew Alpert and Jerry Rubin while on a street. All three individuals were prominent members of the protest movement against the Vietnam War. Davis and Rubin were also members of the Chicago Seven against whom charges were brought for their disruption of the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention. The final photograph in the group shows prominent radical attorney Bill Kunstler at Lennon’s deportation hearing. The back of each photograph is notated in ink with photographic details, dated “1972” and numbered “2/7.” Coincidently, Lennon made his first American appearance following the break-up of the Beatles on stage with his wife Yoko at a Freedom Rally for Leni Sinclair’s husband John who had been sentenced to more than 12 years in prison for the possession of a single marijuana joint. Excellent condition. Estimate: $200 - $300. PLEASE NOTE: THIS DESCRIPTION HAS BEEN AMENDED FROM THE ONE THAT APPEARS IN THE CATALOG.
