John Lennon hand-drawn sketch titled “Surprise” created by John while attending the Berlitz School of Language for 2 months as a student in New York City from November 3,1976-January 3,1977.

Lennon studied Japanese under the direction of Lynne Cushman. He created sketches with Japanese sub titles as a learning tool of the language in preparation for his vacation to Japan in July 1977 with his son Sean and wife Yoko. In Japanese the drawing is titled ODOROKIMASU (I’m Surprised) (ODOROKU) Surprised.

Before this time, the only original drawings created by John that surfaced to the public for purchase were the sketches from his 2 books in the 1960s and from his Bed in 1969 with Yoko. No one except for the immediate family and friends knew of John attending the classes and creating these sketches until they first surfaced in 1985.

The sketch is matted and Plexiglas framed with a copy of the original letter created by Lynn Cushman describing in detail the history of the sketches and John’s attendance sheet applied on the back of the frame.

Good condition.

Sketch measures roughly 3 x 5 in.

Authentication: Gotta Have Rock and Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
