Original artwork by Haring for a wedding invitation for Haring’s personal friend, Pamela French
In 1988, Pamela French was getting married and asked Keith Haring to create their wedding invitation. As a rule, Haring declined and said that he would never do any artwork for a wedding invitation, even for a close friend. Disappointed, French made other arrangements for her wedding.
However, shortly after, Haring surprised French with an incredible design hand-done by him. The work depicts two figures joining together, the symbol of marriage. Overjoyed, French used this art to print her wedding invitations to all of her guests
At the wedding, Haring presented the original artwork to her as a wedding gift for everything she had done for him. This piece of artwork can be photomatched with various pictures from the wedding. This is the only known piece of Haring art that has sold with such solid provenance and a photomatch.
This image has recurred throughout Haring’s career. What is evident in this drawing is Haring’s ability to craft a narrative using his singular visual language: he evokes movement, joy, friendship, and simply the raw, honest energy of being alive. Further affirming their centrality to his body of work, similar iconography was featured in large scale paintings and murals throughout Haring’s accomplished career.
The artwork also comes with the original envelope Keith hand wrote and presented to French during her wedding
Comes with a Letter of Provenance, a James Spence Authentication (JSA) Letter of Authenticity and a Gotta Have Rock and Roll Certificate of Authenticity.
