Motörhead Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor Stage Worn Black Ankle Boots with Buckle.
These are a pair of heavily stage worn black leather ankle books, with silver buckles, that were owned and worn by "Philthy Animal" Phil Taylor, the drummer for Motörhead. According to the letter of provenance from his sister Helen Greenwood (nee Taylor) that accompanied them, Phil purchased the books in the 1980's and brought them with him to the U.S. when he moved there in the 1990's, and is one of a few pairs that he wore on stage and off. In 2012 the boots were shipped back to England, when he returned to England. Tragically he passed away in 2015 from liver failure.
Phil Taylor, better known as "Philthy Animal" was the drummer for the band Motörhead from 1975 to 1984 and 1987 to 1992, recording eleven studio albums and four live albums with the band. The Motörhead line-up consisting of Taylor, Lemmy and "Fast" Eddie Clarke is generally regarded as the 'classic' line-up of the band. Taylor lived a very rough life. Shortly after recording the classic "Ace of Spades" album in 1980, Taylor broke his neck after being lifted above the head of a friend in a test of strength, only to be dropped on his head. Taylor continued to play in Motörhead with the aid of a neck brace, as is visible in the music video for "Ace of Spades". As a result, Taylor had a prominent lump located on the back of his neck (affectionately referred to as his "knob"), thought to be a calcium deposit caused by his previous spinal trauma. Tour-disrupting injuries were not unfamiliar to Taylor at the time, as he had previously broken his hand whilst punching a man outside his flat in London. Taylor continued to drum by using gaffer tape to attach his drum stick into his hand until it had sufficiently healed. In her letter, his sister Helen refers to him having a brain aneurism, and that he didn't wear the boots the last years of his life as it "affected his leg and he had to wear more sensible shoes..."
