On the 13th of November 1966 the Beatles played 2 sets at Brian Epstein’s Saville Theatre one at 6pm and an extra show added at 8:30pm. This really was the hottest ticket in town.
In preparation for this concert Brian Epstein needed an appropriate backdrop for the groups first UK performance turning to Paul McCartney to come up with any ideas. Days later McCartney returned with Twelve hand drawn and annotated color designs for the concert which he pitched to Epstein and John Lyndon (director of productions at the Saville and manager of the Beatles apple boutique). They both loved design number eight of red and white stars and stripes, as they found it most appropriate for the American group. Word quickly got around about these designs as they were mentioned in the NME on the 11 th of November 1966 “BEATLE PAUL, DESIGNER” “The back cloth for the four tops concerts at London’s Saville Theatre on Sunday night is from a drawing by Paul McCartney”.
After the two sold out shows the drawings were gifted to Lyndon from Brian Epstein and they hung in his office in the theater until he passed them on later in life.
These drawings are one of the finest examples of Paul McCartney's creativity and artistic skills to ever be offered to the market and are a special insight to this historical show that night and the creative mindset of the greatest singer songwriter of all time.
They have been on display in the Liverpool Beatles museum, the world's most authentic Beatles museum and have been broadcasted on multiple mainstream news outlets worldwide for their rarity and importance.
These drawings are housed in a uv protected glass frame. They also come with a modern matte photo of the four tops on the night where you can see the back cloth in the background designed by Paul.
