Richard Milhous Nixon was the 37th President of the United States. A two-term President, he served in office from Jan. 20, 1969 to August 9, 1974. His second term ended early when he became the only U.S. president to resign from office, as a result of the infamous Watergate scandal. Prior to serving as President, he was the 36th vice president (1953 to 1961) under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The offered lot is a type-written letter on official White House stationary (“Office of the Vice President”) signed by Nixon at the time he was serving as V.P while running as the Republican nominee for President in the 1960 campaign.

The letter, dated Oct. 22, 1960, was sent to Mr. Henry Lewis Shank from Pound Ridge, New York, who was campaigning for Nixon during the latter’s race against Democrat John F. Kennedy for the Presidency. In the letter, Nixon says: “In a race this close, however, the issue has et to be decided, and I shall be counting on you, and on all who believe as we do, to join me in working even more vigorously during the critical weeks ahead for the success which an all-out campaign will assure.” Nixon signed the letter in black ink. The signature is strong.
