Editor Bill Harry printed 5000 copies of the premiere six-page issue of "Mersey Beat" in July 1961. And on page two of that very first issue is John Lennon's humorous column "Being A Short Diversion On The Dubious Origins Of Beatles". An excerpt: "... three little boys called John, George and Paul...all grew guitars and formed a noise...with a fourth littler man called Stuart Sutcliff...people ask what are Beatles?...It came in a vision - a man appeared on a flaming pie and said unto them ‘From this day on you are Beatles with an ‘A'." Mersey Beat was the definitive chronicle of the Liverpool music scene during that pivotal era of the early to mid-1960's when many Merseyside artists, most notably The Beatles, gained worldwide fame. The 9.5" x 13" newspaper exhibits typical age toning. Estimate $600-$800.
