William H. Welch handwritten signed letter dated January 14, 1916 on Maryland Club 4.5 X 7 stationery from this renowned physician, pathologist, bacteriologist and medical school administrator who was one of the “Big Four” founding professors at John Hopkins Hospital and founder of the John Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health (the FIRST school of public health in the country). Welch mentions the name Miss Holman in his letter, who most certainly refers to the work of nurse Lydia Hollman who was renowned for providing care throughout rural Appalachia. Upon learning of her work, Holman and Welch formed the Holman Association for the Promotion of Rural Nursing, Hygiene and Social Services. Recipient of numerous Awards throughout his lifetime and posthumously, Welch is considered the “Dean of American Medicine.” Excellent condition.
