Zachary Taylor 1834 manuscript document signed as Commanding Officer Fort Crawford (Michigan Territory, now in Wisconsin).

The letter reads: “Received Fort Crawford M.T. April 1st 1834. Of Lieut T.B.W. Stockton Asst Quarter Master one cord of Wood in full of the above requisition. Duplicate.”

Taylor gained popularity during the Black Hawk War (conflict against Native Americans led by Black Hawk) and the Second Seminole War (conflict against Florida Native Americans known as Seminoles) and earned the nickname “Old Rough and Ready.” He became a national hero for his victories in the Mexican-American War.

As a result of his popularity, Taylor defeated Winfield Scott and former Senator Henry Clay at the 1848 Whig National Convention and went on to be elected the 12th President of the United States (1849-1850). Taylor’s top priority was to preserve the Union but only held the presidency for sixteen months before dying in office.

Dimensions: The signed document visually measures 7 in x 5 in and is displayed with a photographic print of Taylor picturing the Presidential Seal, framed to measure 18 in x 22 in.
